🦺 Storm & Power Outage Safety Tips from Dyersburg Electric System 🦺

Winter weather can bring power outages and dangerous conditions. Please take a moment to review these important safety reminders.

⚠️ Generator & Power Safety (MOST IMPORTANT)
• Never use generators, grills, or propane heaters indoors or in garages
• Generators must be used outdoors only, far away from doors and windows
• Never plug a generator into a wall outlet — this can cause dangerous backfeed and seriously injure linemen

🚧 Downed Power Lines
• Stay at least 30 feet away from downed lines
• Always assume lines are energized and dangerous
• If a line falls on your vehicle, stay inside and call 911 and Dyersburg Electric System

🔥 Heating Safety During Outages
• Keep flammable items at least 3 feet from heat sources
• Do not use ovens or stovetops for heat
• Never leave open flames unattended

🚰 Prevent Frozen Pipes
• Let faucets drip slowly during extreme cold
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate
• Know where your main water shutoff is located

📱 Stay Prepared & Informed
• Charge phones and battery packs ahead of the storm
• Visit the Dyersburg Electric System outage map at
www.hometowngrid.com/dyersburg for updates
• Keep flashlights, extra batteries, and a battery-powered radio ready

🏠 Food & Home Safety
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible
• Use flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risk
• Check on elderly neighbors and those with special needs

❄️ Snow is on the way! Is your home ready for the freeze?

With a major winter storm forecast to hit the Valley tomorrow, now is the time to take a few quick steps to stay warm, safe, and energy-efficient.

Here are 4 "Last-Minute" tips from TVA EnergyRight to do before the snow starts:

🌬️ Seal the Drafts: Use weatherstripping or even a rolled-up towel at the base of exterior doors to keep the heat in and the arctic air out.

♨️ Check Your Filter: A clean HVAC filter helps your system breathe easier when it has to work overtime in sub-freezing temps.

💧 Protect Your Pipes: Open cabinet doors under sinks and let your furthest faucet have a very slow drip to prevent freezing.

☀️ Use the Sun: Open south-facing curtains tomorrow morning to let the sun naturally warm your home, then shut them tight at sunset to trap that heat!

Pro Tip: If you're looking for long-term savings, visit EnergyRight.com to find a local contractor and check out rebates for insulation and HVAC upgrades that can save you money all year long! 💰
